DIY – String Herb Garden
January 26, 2012Remember last week, we posted some very cool pics of Kokedama (Japanese String Gardens)?? Well, Robin and I couldn’t wait to create some of our own!
While we were out buying supplies, we thought, wouldn’t it be cool to have your own hanging herb garden in your kitchen for cooking? So, it could be pretty and functional!
We set to work!
Time: 45 minutes
Skill Level: Easy!
Cost: $25
- Plants/flowers – we choose herbs – thyme, parsley and basil
- Soil – we picked up a small pack of all-purpose
- Moss – can be found at any garden store
- Twine
Step #1: Soak your moss in water – it’s much easier to use when it’s wet
Step #2: Take your plants out of their pots and remove any extra dirt and roots – you want to make sure you keep a lot of the roots on, but you want to have a nice, small, round base to work with
Step #3: Create a small pile of dirt on your work surface and place your plant in it. Then, start packing in the dirt to make a round shape
Step #4: Next, you take the wet moss and place it around your dirt base. Make sure that every inch of dirt is covered with moss – the moss acts as a barrier, so that your plant won’t leak!
Step #5: Now it’s time to secure your plant with twine. Start wrapping the twine around the moss to make sure everything is secure. There is no right or wrong way to do this, so just take your time
You can either leave your plants as is and place them in a dish on your counter….OR, you can hang them like we did!
Robin had a couple of random nails in her wall, so we worked with those and added a few of our own. We wrapped the twine around the nails and it turned into this fun star shape!
We then hung the plants to the twine and attached little tags to each of them, so we knew which herb was which.

Ta-da! Now Robin has a unique hanging herb garden in her kitchen.
Once we were done, our minds started spinning about where else we could use these plants, especially when it came to event design – as guest place cards, hanging from a tree during a ceremony, in an entryway to an event….the opportunities are endless!
Let’s just say, this probably won’t be the last time you see Kokedamas from Hoopla!

Look at that! It looks great! I love it! I bet it smells good too!

This is very cool. I love it! I may do this for our kitchen.

Looks great ladies. I think this just may definately be something that I try out. The herb idea is wonderful!

I love this idea! Marc and I can barely keep up with our summertime herbs in the back yard (only just finishing the basil we dried right about now in January!) so I don’t think I’ll try this myself, but how perfect for people without an outdoor space?!

This is so cool! I am going to have to try this… I love the way it looks.

Great idea, but hmmmmm. You should know that you mixed up two of the herbs. The one with the bigger leaves, labelled thyme, is actually the basil, and the one labelled basil is the time…hehe.

Such a cute idea, but I was wondering how would you go about watering them?

Very cool! If I show this to Andrew we’ll have these guys hanging all over our condo!
